Welcome!!!
This imposing building, which offers beds for 55 people, is
set on the spine of the Aiguille di Chatelet, the last outpost before
penetrating the heart of Mont Blanc.
The Monzino refuge is placed between the tormented Brouillard and Freney
glaciers, which are surrounded by the splendid and severe amphitheatre made up
of the Aiguille Noire, the Cresta of Peuterey, the huge pilasters of Mont Blanc
and the crests and ridges of the Innominata and the Brouillard.
This scenery has brought fear and awe to the many alpinists that have over the
years adventured on these peaks, the severity and grandeur of this setting has
above all thrilled the fantasy and skill of some of the best climbers of all
time.
The ascents of the Crest of the Innominata, the Crest of Brouillard, the Crest
of Integrale of Peuterey, the Central Pilaster have marked fundamental stages in
the history of classic alpinism and are still today splendid ascents, of great
effort, that every ambitious climber would want on his curriculum.
The best alpinists of present day are drawn and fascinated by these peaks. This
has been evidenced by the enthusiastic climbs of Motto and Gabarrou, who with
different partners, have completed an impressive number of routes of varying
difficulty, always with rigorous ethics. The eclecticism of the Frenchman has
also made him protagonist on ice and mixed terrain, where, accompanied by the
best climbers of the nineties, he opened some very difficult routes in this
grand setting.
One could dwell for much longer on the routes that have been opened by great
alpinists of our time: Marsigny, Boivin, Long, Dumarest, Vogler, Piola, to name
but a few, they have contributed to making the basin behind the Monzino refuge
into an area of endless climbing possibilities, with a huge choice of routes
suitable for all abilities.
